Improving Wellbeing in Geriatric Care at Darmstadt-Dieburg with the Tovertafel

At the Darmastadt-Dieburg district clinics in Germany, the Tovertafel is bringing energy and connection to the geriatrics department.

What started as a cautious first interaction quickly turned into visible enthusiasm, not just from leadership but especially for the people in their care.

 

“You don’t have to do much, but it still makes an impact,” explains physician Christel Sprößler.

 

Used in weekly therapy sessions, the Tovertafel supports people living with dementia by gently stimulating physical, sensory, social and cognitive abilities. The team at Darmastadt-Dieburg shared how it’s helping people regain initiative, stay active without becoming overstimulated, and experience moments of happiness. Thanks to the support of the clinic’s fundraising association, the Tovertafel is now part of daily geriatric care — and they’re planning on expanding its use even further.
