Game Designer

By 2030, Tover aims to create 10 million moments of happiness per day for people with cognitive challenges. To achieve this, we’re looking for our next Game Designer to help us bring play (back) into the lives of people living with cognitive challenges around the world.

About Tover

At Tover, we believe play is essential to dignity. Our magical Tovertafel games bring moments of joy to people living with dementia, intellectual disabilities, and other cognitive challenges. Tover is leading the way in designing serious games that have a proven effect on quality of life. Playing for a better existence. That’s what we call “purposeful play”.

By 2035, Tover aims to create 10 million minutes of purposeful play per day for people with cognitive challenges. Are you joining us on this mission, bringing play (back) into the lives of people living with cognitive challenges?

Our Tovertafel games — serious games designed for people with dementia, intellectual disabilities, and children with special needs — are already used in more than 11.000 institutions worldwide. And we’re just getting started! There are still many people, families, and caregivers who could benefit from the playful energy the Tovertafel brings.

The role

We are looking for a proactive and creative Game Designer with a strong vision on the power of play. In this role, you will act as the linking pin between our UX researcher, visual artist and developers, bringing our game portfolio and game design process to the next level. You will translate themes and ideas created by our Research & Design team into fully developed game designs that are ready to enter the market.

Besides designing, you will play an important role in testing and validating games with our target audiences, both locally and internationally. You will feel at ease in a care home, interacting with our end users and dealing with unexpected situations. Moreover, you enjoy overseeing and streamlining the game design process, ensuring that we work smoothly and effectively with a small team and deliver high-quality output.

Are you a game designer that wants to create playful interactions with a positive impact on the lives of people living with cognitive challenges? Are you eager to learn, ambitious, creative and social? We’d love to hear from you.

  • Creating design narratives and lo-fi prototypes that bring game concepts to life.
  • Organising brainstorms and breakdown sessions with the design and development team.
  • Writing effective user stories.
  • Organising and executing validation sessions of game prototypes in the field.
  • Streamlining (and improving) the game development process, e.g. ticketing system and user testing procedures.

What we ask for:

  • Strong design skills. A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Game Design, Interaction Design or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in the (serious) games industry.
  • Energetic, hands-on, and entrepreneurial attitude.
  • A structured way of working with strong attention to detail.
  • Familiar with Human-Computer interactions (AR, VR, Motion controls, etc).
  • Fluent in Dutch (to understand all nuances during user testing).
  • Fluent in English to be able to work in an international team.
  • A playful spirit.

Nice to have/Pros:

  • Experience working with sensitive audiences.
  • Familiar with co-design methods, design thinking and user centered design.

  • Experience with interactive projection technology.
  • Experience with game engines like Unity, Unreal or Godot.
  • Familiar with the latest developments and possibilities with AI.
  • Strong drawing/visualisation skills.

What we offer:

  • A challenging role in the MedTech/serious-games industry (32-36 hours)
  • The opportunity to contribute to meaningful social and societal goals
  • A fantastic team of talented and enthusiastic people
  • Fun team outings and drinks
